Mauchline Ware Playing Cards Box, Victorian.
A small wooden Mauchline Ware box made for storing playing cards. This lovely 19th Century, rare little box was made in Scotland as a souvenir item of Britain with transfer images of The Pier, Hastings on the lid with a playing card from each suit.
On the sides are transfer ware pictures of Wray Castle, Windermere, Kirkby, Londsdale Bridge and Lansdowne Crescent Blackpool.
The box is made of sycamore wood by W & A. Smith. Mauchline Ware began in the 1820's and was produced till 1933.
This box has been well used for its purpose and the patina and colour of the wood is beautiful. The transfer ware images have good clarity and only one of the cards on the lid is faded. There are one or two other imperfections - a small chip to the bottom corner and a section of thin wood in the interior that would have enclosed the playing cards, is missing. There is also a split to the base which has been fixed.
The box has been recently lovingly restored to its current appearance.
